Calvins 4x4x5 Bubbloid by Carl Hoff
Calvin's 4x4x5 Bubbloid puzzle by Carl Hoff
Designed by Carl Hoff, and only available to those that afford to buy a 3D printed version over the last few years, the superb Bubbloid puzzles have now been mass produced, in a collaboration between Calvin's Puzzles, David Ang, and the designer Carl Hoff.
The puzzle was originally named the Bubbloid 122, and so named because of the number of pieces shared between turning vertices.
It is a corner turning puzzle, with 8 turning vertices.
As much a work of art, this puzzle is among the most beautiful twisty puzzles ever made, and something that should be in the collection of every serious puzzler.
Great looking puzzle - poor turning quality

Out of the box, forget it, it's either not turning on the corners or popping the parts out. Find yourself a little tutorial to fine tune the screws tension. The solve is easier than it looks, no parity here. Stickers are good, you might want to change this shade of blue for a more classical darker blue...

This is certainly one of the most beautiful twisty puzzles I've seen, and the solve is very enjoyable, if slightly easier than it may first appear. It reminds me of the Rex Cube and the Curvy Copter.
The big issue is the poor setup these puzzles were given before leaving the factory. I've tightened the screws on mine, which improves things dramatically, but it still locks up every now and then. Pieces aren't popping out all over the place like they did when it was fresh out of the box, but I can't help thinking that the pointy tips of the inner petals on each face could have done with being slightly rounded. That's what seems to be causing the lockups on mine.
Turning can be fixed

This puzzle at first glance looks incredible. Like a work of art. Even when scrambled I'm happy to have this sit on my desk. It's beautiful.
Solving is not as hard as I had expected but it could pose a difficult challenge if you're new to twisty puzzles or have just solved a 3x3x3.
So let's talk turning. This puzzle received a load of bad press on release. Some of it warranted because, yes the turning wasn't great on some that were sent out from the factory.
However, this is an EASY fix. Remove corners, which are actually centre caps, tighten screws. Done.
Mine actually turned like a dream out of the box.
Overall it looks and handles well and is a great addition to any collection. I'd buy it again.
Be excellent and happy puzzling everyone.
Ok, but some issues

The cube looks amazing, but turning is a problem. The turning is fine, until for some reason a whole section of the puzzle becomes lose and pieces fall out. You can fix this by pushing them all back in really hard. This is however a known problem by the designer and manifacturer and we knew this before buying the puzzle. It's just very annoying.
